VOLT Mustang Wins GTS Race 1

Trent Hindman and Alan Brynjolfsson have claimed victory in Saturday’s Pirelli World Challenge GTS SprintX round at Virginia International Raceway.

A perfectly timed pit stop put the No. 77 VOLT Racing Ford Mustang GT4 out front in the 60-minute race, and saw Hindman extend his lead to more than six seconds prior to a heavy accident that brought out the race’s second full-course caution with 12 minutes to go.

The race did not restart due to required barrier repairs.

It marked the first pro victory for team owner/driver Alan Brynjolfsson, as well as the Mike Johnson-led crew, which rallied from 8th on the grid.

The No. 14 GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS GT4 of James Sofronas and Alex Welch was second, followed by defending GTS champion Lawson Aschenbach in the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, which was started by Andy Pilgrim.

Both Sofronas and Aschenbach got around the GTS-Am class-leading No. 92 Classic BMW M4 GT4 of Chris Ohmacht, which had been out front overall in the hands of Toby Grahovec, with 20 minutes to go.

Ohmacht settled for fifth overall, but still picked up class honors.

The No. 60 PF Racing Mustang GT4 of Scott Maxwell led early, getting around the pole-sitting No. 74 Robinson Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Shane Lewis on the opening lap, but both cars faded in the second-half.

A slow pit stop dropped Maxwell and co-driver Jade Buford to 7th, with Lewis and Gar Robinson finishing 10th overall.

The second GTS SprintX race of the weekend is scheduled for Sunday at 1:50 p.m. EDT.
