GP2 Champ Fabio Leimer Set for Rebellion Drive

Another promising open-wheel star is poised for a switch to the FIA World Endurance Championship this year.

Sportscar365 has learned that reigning GP2 champion Fabio Leimer has lined up a drive with Rebellion Racing in one of its two LMP1-L entries for the global sports car championship.

The 24-year-old Swiss driver, who claimed three wins and seven podium finishes in his GP2 championship-winning season with Racing Engineering last year, was not picked up by a F1 team for 2014.

Instead, Leimer’s career is set to take him to prototype racing. He is expected to join Nick Heidfeld, Nicolas Prost, Mathias Beche and Dominik Kraihamer in the Anglo-Swiss squad’s two-car effort.

An official announcement is expected to come next week, including further details on the new Rebellion R-One, which has faced delays.

Both of Rebellion’s 2013-spec Lola B12/60 Toyotas will be used in next week’s FIA WEC “The Prologue” pre-season test at Paul Ricard, while the team hasn’t yet ruled out the ORECA-built prototype from making the season-opening Six Hours of Silverstone next month.
