Jarvis, Nunez Claim Second Straight Win for Mazda

Oliver Jarvis led another Mazda Team Joest 1-2 in Sunday’s red-flag affected Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

The Englishman took his No. 77 Mazda RT24-P to a 1.699-second win over the sister No. 55 entry of Harry Tincknell, who claimed the team’s breakthrough first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory last weekend at Watkins Glen.

While coming in another controlling performance for the Multimatic-built DPis, it came following a heavy late-race crash by Victor Franzoni in the No. 50 Juncos Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R, whose car ended up on its side in the Turn 2 tire barriers.

The race was red-flagged with 17 minutes to go amid the cleanup from Franzoni’s accident, with the clock stopped for a total of 7 minutes and 54 seconds.

Franzoni was awake and alert and is being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, according to a statement from IMSA.

It set up a 14-minute shootout to the finish, which saw Jarvis extend his advantage over the No. 55 car.

The No. 77 Mazda DPi took over the lead in the final round of pit stops when the team’s then race-leading No. 55 entry lost time with an issue with the air jack and tire change.

Jarvis shared top honors with longtime Mazda development turned factory driver Tristan Nunez, who picked up his first career overall victory in IMSA competition.

The No. 6 Team Penske Acura ARX-05 of Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya came home third, with Cameron holding off a hard-charging Pipo Derani for the final podium position to extend their points lead over Derani and co-driver Felipe Nasr.

The No. 7 Penske Acura DPi of Ricky Taylor completed the top-five after rebounding from an unscheduled stop early for a slow puncture.

Colin Braun, who was challenging for a top-five on the final restart, spun at Moss Corner with seven minutes to go and saw him drop back to a seventh place result in the No. 54 CORE autosport Nissan DPi.

The No. 5 Mustang Sampling Racing Cadillac DPi of Filipe Albuquerque, meanwhile, stopped on track with five minutes to go, although it did not bring out a caution.

LMP2 class honors went again to the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca 07 Gibson of Matt McMurry and Dalton Kellett.

It came after multiple issues for the class pole-sitting No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports entry, which brought out the race’s one-and-only full-course caution in the final hour.

While McMurry picked up his third consecutive class win, Road to Indy driver Kellett claimed victory in his sports car racing debut.
