Bruno Junqueira will make his return to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition as part of an expanded two-car Prototype Challenge effort for BAR1 Motorsports in next weekend’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America.
The 40-year-old Brazilian, who had been a regular with former PC team RSR Racing, will join Matt McMurry in the BAR1’s No. 20 Oreca FLM09, with Johnny Mowlem moving over to the No. 26 alongside Don Yount.
Both cars will carry sponsorship from Gas Monkey Energy, a company Yount is an investor in.
“This is an exciting announcement for our team,” said team owner Brian Alder. “We’ve put a lot of work into making this happen.
“Bruno’s record in the PC cars speaks for itself. It’s especially his qualifying statistics that caught our eye. The feedback he and Johnny can provide will be extremely valuable to our setups.”
As a result, the Road America round will see an expected nine-car PC entry.
Junqueira, who has five career WeatherTech Championship poles and two wins with RSR, will have a busy month ahead as he will also take part in the FIA World Endurance Championship round in Mexico City with Greaves Motorsport.
