Alex Kirby has been placed on probation from IMSA for the next four WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races he enters for his responsibility in a four-car pileup during last weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.
The driver of the No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports Ligier JS P320 Nissan was deemed to have been at fault for the incident that took out the then GTD Pro class-leading No. 63 Iron Lynx Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2, as well as the No. 42 NTE Sport Lamborghini with two hours and 25 minutes remaining in the race.
The incident, which also collected the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac V-Series.R, resulted in a lengthy caution period, with Kirby having been given an incident responsibility penalty in-race.
IMSA director Beaux Barfield, in conjunction with the IMSA supervisory officials, found Kirby to have been responsible for the pileup after post-race analysis.
The probation will also be in effect for all other IMSA series until Kirby’s WeatherTech Championship probation period is concluded.
“IMSA will continue to monitor all on-track conduct and will act accordingly and consistently should there be a further deterioration of driving behavior,” a statement from the sanctioning body read.
It marks the second IMSA driver to have recently been placed on probation following Robert Megennis’ incident at Detroit in Michelin Pilot Challenge competition.
