The Ford GT Mk IV track-only supercar has set a new Nürburgring lap record, becoming the fastest American automaker around the Nordschleife.
Ford Racing factory driver Fred Vervisch was clocked at a time of 6:15.977, eclipsing the previous record for an American car, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X that ran a 6:49.275.
The GT Mk IV has become the third-fastest car around the Nordschleife and the quickest with a fullly internal combustion engine powertrain.
Timo Bernhard still holds the outright record, a 5:19.546, at the wheel of Porsche’s 919 Hybrid Evo that was set in 2018, while the all-electric Volkswagen ID.R, driven by Romain Dumas, sits second, at a 6:05.335 lap time.
Ford and GM have been facing off in recent months on the legendary German circuit, with the ‘Blue Oval’ having attempted record runs with a modified version of its Mustang GTD road-going car, until bringing the Multimatic-built supercar to the track.
