Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson clinched the overall Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America drivers’ championship with a race to spare by taking victory in the opening contest at Misano.
The No. 101 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 started the race from pole position, joined on the second row by the No. 129 TR3 Racing machine of Will Bamber.
Bamber and Elias de la Torre, second in the standings, needed to finish ahead of Formal and Ericsson in order to keep their title hopes alive.
However, a slow start saw Bamber slip back to fourth as Formal maintained the lead in the opening stint before handing over to Ericsson.
The Swedish racer subsequently kept the No. 101 car in the lead even as De la Torre fought back up to second place, allowing the WTR crew to take a deciding win and clinch the title in the process.
For Formal, it marked his third championship in four years, regaining the title after losing out to TR3 Racing pairing Ernie Francis Jr. and Giano Taurino last year.
Additionally, the result marked WTR’s 100th Super Trofeo North America class victory.
Al Morey crossed the line third in the No. 177 Forty7 Motorsport Lamborghini he shared with Keawn Tandon after applying late pressure on De la Torre. The two cars were separated by 0.977 seconds at the flag.
Enzo Geraci and Colin Queen finished fourth in the No. 104 ANSA Motorsport Lamborghini, while Francis Jr. and Luke Berkeley completed the overall top five at the wheel of Alliance Racing’s No. 128 car.
Conrad Geis and Jason Hart finished sixth overall and took the Pro-Am class victory in the No. 167 TR3 Racing Lamborghini, 9.578 seconds ahead of the all Lithuanian pairing of Tadas Karlinskas and Darius Trinka.
Mateo Siderman captured the Am-class victory in eighth overall, ahead of Antoine Comeau and Nicolas Jamin aboard the No. 130 ANSA Motorsport machine.
Jamin was involved in a collision with WTR’s Nick Persing that resulted in a 30-second penalty for the latter, which resulted in the No. 108 Lamborghini classified in 17th overall despite running as high as second in the opening exchanges.
The overall top ten was completed by Lindsay Brewer and Jem Hepworth, while Rocky T Bolduc took the LB Cup class victory from pole in 16th overall.
The second and final North America race of the weekend is scheduled for Friday at 9:15 a.m. CET (3:15 a.m. ET).
