Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson brought Wayne Taylor Racing back to victory lane in the opening race of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America double-header at Road America.
After a clean start to the 50-minute contest, Formal led from the pole, opening up a more than six-second gap before handing the No. 1 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 off to co-driver Ericsson, who continued to pace the field, taking the checkered flag and eventual win 8.53 seconds clear of the TR3 Racing duo of Elias De La Torre and Will Bamber.
Third overall and in Pro was the No. 22 World Speed Lamborghini of Jaden Conwright and Scott Huffaker.
Trent Hindman and Jackson Lee delivered WTR a Pro-Am victory, finishing fourth overall, with both drivers enjoying comfortable gaps at the head of the class during their respective stints. Saturday marked Lee’s first career Super Trofeo victory.
Tadas Karlinskas and Darius Trinka, meanwhile, finish runner-up in Pro-Am for MLT Motorsports.
Hindman and Formal both took home race-winning hardware on a weekend where they are also competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the GTD class.
Precision Performance Motorsports’ David Staab took the Am class win in the No. 48 Lamborghini, fending off pressure from Lindsey Brewer behind, who takes her third-consecutive second-place class finish alongside RAFA Racing teammate Jem Hepworth, despite the duo leading laps earlier on.
LB Cup pole-sitter Nick Groat lost the class lead after contact from the No. 12 One Motorsports entry of Anthony Bullock, allowing Ray Shahi to inherit the LB Cup lead, dropping Groat to third in class, and earning Bullock a drive-through penalty.
Groat, however, fought his way back up the order and retook the class lead on track before the race’s mandatory round of pit stops and maintained his advantage until the checkered flag to secure the LB Cup win comfortably ahead of Jon Hirshberg.
In the final minutes, Shahi made contact with the tire barriers out of the final corner, but remarkably continued on in the No. 65 Forte Lamborghini. After a subsequent spin at the same corner, however, the Forte driver took to pit lane to retire.
Paul Nemschoff spun at Turn 10 while running third in Pro-Am early in the race, damaging the rear end of his No. 41 Flying Lizard Motorsports Lamborghini and resulting in a race retirement behind the wall.
Christopher Tasca also momentarily stopped on track at Turn 10 before refiring the engine in his Fory7 Motorsports Lamborghini and rejoining the order.
While running fifth in Pro, the ANSA Motorsports machine of Colin Queen went off at Turn 3 just before Slade Stewart separately suffered a spin in the No. 14 ‘Sparklfarts’ Flying Lizard Motorsports Lamborghini. Both drivers rejoined without incident, albeit further down the order in their respective classes.
Nick Persing collected a ten-second post-race time penalty for hitting the Hepworth’s No. 2 RAFA entry heading into Canada Corner earlier in the race.
Later in the race, Mark Brummond was penalized 10 seconds for incident responsibility with Jon Hirshberg’s No. 86 Forte machine of Hirshberg.
Conrad Geis avoided an accident after spinning multiple times at The Kink on his outlap after taking over from co-driver Jason Hart before eventually getting back on track.
Race 2 will go green at 9:25 a.m. CST with live coverage on Peacock as well as IMSA and Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s YouTube channels.
