Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson swept the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America weekend at Road America, surviving a post-race penalty to secure the Race 2 win.
Despite effectively leading from flag-to-flag, the eventual race-winning No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 was assessed a ten-second post-race time penalty for Ericsson jumping the race’s only restart just before the pit window opened and he handed over to co-driver Danny Formal.
With knowledge of the impending penalty time, Formal began to open up enough of a gap to the No. 29 TR3 Racing entry of Will Bamber to maintain his position at the head of the field and take the eventual overall and Pro class win.
He was further helped by the fact that Bamber was also penalized ten seconds for crew members working on the car outside of the team’s pit box while he took over from Elias De La Torre.
Bamber’s penalty promoted Scott Huffaker and Jaden Conwright into second place overall, ahead of the third-place finishing No. 8 WTR Lamborghini of Nick Persing.
Colin Queen finished fourth overall for ANSA Motorsports, with Bamber and De La Torre’s penalty relegating them to fifth position at the checkered flag.
An impressive opening stint from Conrad Geis brought the No. 67 TR3 Racing entry he shares with Jason Hart to the head of the Pro-Am field after starting sixth in class.
Hart kept his TR3 machine at the head of the class to take the checkered flag and Pro-Am victory 11.836 seconds ahead of Darius Trinka.
Jem Hepworth and Lindsey Brewer took their first Super Trofeo wins in the Am class after three consecutive second-place finishes, after Hepworth made the move on then-leader Graham Doyle late in the race.
Nick Groat doubled up in LB Cup with his second class win of the weekend, taking the checkered flag with a comfortable margin over Christopher Tasca’s Forty7 Motorsports machine.
The race quickly fell under caution after multiple Lap 1 incidents, triggered initially by Mateo Siderman spinning on the run into Turn 3, collecting the No. 81 RAFA Racing Lamborghini of Sebastian Vasan, resulting in race-ending damage for both cars.
Andy Lee ended up beached in the Turn 3 gravel trap, but managed to refire his engine and was able to continue on further down the order. Later in the race, Lee’s co-driver Slade Stweart went off at turn 14, but avoided any major incident.
Into the Moraine Sweep ahead of Turn 5 Jon Hirshberg appeared to run over a rogue side-view mirror, pitching his No. 86 Forte Racing machine sideways and into he right-hand side wall and later into the side of the No. 99 RAFA Lamborghini of Rockey T Bolduc.
Bolduc eventually rejoined the race, but suffered an issue late in the race, seeing the No. 99 Lamborghini lose pace and eventually take to pit lane.
After the opening lap melee, Jackson Lee was pushed behind the wall in the Race 1 Pro-Am class-winning No. 69 WTR Lamborghini he shared with Trent Hindman with front-end damage sustained at the start.
Racing action resumed with just over 30 minutes remaining.
On the final lap, the No. 12 One Motorsports Lamborghini of Anthony Bullock crashed hard at Turn 2.
However, the yellow came out just after Formal took the checkered flag. Bullock emerged from his stricken Lamborghini under his own power.
