Wayne Taylor Racing’s Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson claimed pole positions for this weekend’s pair of Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America rounds at Road America after multiple red flag stoppages.
Formal claimed the Race 1 pole with a 2:04.958 lap time set during his one and only flying lap aboard the No. 1 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 in the 15-minute session after a red flag significantly shortened running.
The WTR driver outpaced TR3 Racing’s Will Bamber by 0.650 seconds to lead an all-Pro class front row and set the fastest lap overall across the pair of sessions. Behind, Trent Hindman secured the Pro-Am pole with the third overall best time in the No. 69 WTR Lamborghini.
Jason Hart was second quickest in Pro-Am and fourth best overall for TR3 after surviving a spin on his first lap at Turn 5. Meanwhile, World Speed’s Scott Huffaker was fifth-fastest overall in his Pro class No. 22 entry in Q1.
David Staab took the Race 1 Am class pole for Precision Performance Motorsports with the tenth quickest overall time in the session, while Nick Groat secured the LB Cup pole in his solo-driven One Motorsports entry.
Qualifying 2 saw Ericsson on pole position in the No. 1 WTR Lamborghini he shares with Formal on the overall and pole, with the Swede laying down a 2:05.623 benchmark time to outpace stablemate Nate Persing by 0.279 seconds.
Elias De La Torre was third-quickest overall and in Pro ahead of ANSA Motorsports’ Enzo Geraci in fourth overall in the No. 4 Lamborghini.
Pro-Am pole-sitter Andy Lee was fifth fastest overall, but came under review from race control for an on-track incident with the No. 46, which saw McAuliffe stop on track at turn 13, bringing out the red flag in the final minutes of Q2.
Kaizen Autosport’s Wyatt Foster was second-quickest in class with the eighth-best overall time.
Glenn McGee took the Am class pole in second qualifying for WTR with the ninth quickest time overall in the session, while Groat doubled up on LB Cup pole positions, narrowly outpacing Christopher Tasca in the second session.
Q1 was quickly interrupted by a red flag when Rocky T Bolduc went off track at Turn 8, impacting the barriers and damaging the right-hand side and rear of his No. 99 RAFA Racing Lamborghini before any official lap times had been laid down.
The session resumed with less than four minutes remaining, allowing drivers a single flying lap to secure their grid spots for Race 1.
As the session resumed, an additional notice from race control stripped the No. 28 Alliance Racing entry of Ernie Francis Jr. of its qualifying time for causing the red flag.
Given the short amount of run time in Q1, no fewer than five drivers, including Pro class competitor Nick Persing, failed to set a representative time and will start from the rear of the grid for Saturday’s race.
During the session, Garrett Adams came under review from the stewards for a reported on-track incident involving multiple cars. Moments later, Sean McAuliffe stopped on track at turn 13, bringing out the red flag.
In Q2, Paul Nemschoff went off the circuit at the exit of Canada Corner before getting his Flying Lizard Motorsports entry back on track.
Race 1 takes the green flag on Saturday at 11:55 a.m. CST with live coverage available on Peacock as well as Lamborghini Squadra Corse and IMSA’s YouTube channels.
