Renaud Kuppens denied Anthony McIntosh and Glenn McGee a second consecutive Lamborghini Super Trofeo Am world title, despite the American pairing coming out on top in the deciding race at Jerez.
McGee took the No. 169 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 to victory by a margin of 0.530 seconds over Kuppens’ No. 2 Boutsen VDS Lamborghini.
The race finished under safety car when Vincent Tai spun the No. 251 Arrows Racing Lamborghini into the gravel at Turn 5 with ten minutes remaining.
The two squads captured a win each after Kuppens was declared the winner of Race 1 on Saturday, but Kuppens’ additional point for capturing Am pole position for Race 2 decided the championship in the favor of the Belgian driver.
The No. 2 car ran the opening stint ahead of McIntosh, but the North American pairing was able to leapfrog ahead as Kuppens spent three seconds longer stationary in the pits as a solo driver.
McGee then held off Kuppens for the remainder of the race to win, with Garrett Adams finishing third in the No. 107 ANSA Motorsports machine.
North American squads made up the remainder of the overall top five, with solo drivers David Staab and Dominic Starkweather fourth and fifth in their Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghinis.
Stephane Lemeret and Rodrigue Gillion slotted into sixth for CMR ahead of Target Racing’s Huilin Han as Graham Doyle and Ashton Harrison crossed the line in eighth place.
The top ten completed was completed by the No. 72 DL Racing Lamborghini of Diego Locanto and Lucas Valkre, ahead of LB Cup world champion Holger Harmsen.
The German, driving solo in the No. 90 GT3 Poland Lamborghini, completed a clean sweep of class wins at Jerez to secure the championship.
