Robert Noaker swept the Mustang Challenge weekend at Road America with his Race 2 win on Sunday, leading every session and every racing lap across the pair of rounds in Wisconsin.
Noaker continued his championship-leading pace, dominating Sunday’s race and surviving a pair of restarts around the 4.048-mile road course to take the checkered flag 1.157 seconds clear of the second-place finishing No. 26 Ford Mustang Dark Horse R of Sam Paley.
After a heavy crash as a result of a mechanical failure in Race 1, Paley was back on the grid for Race 2 in a car on loan from Robert Noaker Racing.
The Ford Performance Junior Team driver started from the back of the grid, but quickly climbed the order into seventh overall and fifth in DH before an incident for Nicholas Smither triggered a full-course caution.
Paley continued his charge on the restart, swiftly making his way into the overall podium positions, eventually dispatching Devin Anderson before the race’s second caution period.
Despite starting third on the grid, Sandy Satullo mysteriously lost pace on the opening lap, dropping to the back of the field, but later rebounded, making up significant ground to finish fourth overall by the checkered flag.
Marcos Vento rounded out the overall top five for McCumbee McAleer Racing.
Alex Bachoura looked set to take back-to-back Dark Horse Legends class wins at Road America, but a ten-second time penalty for the Spark Performance driver handed Alfonso Diaz the DHL victory in a car borrowed from Spark Performance.
MMR’s Zachry Lee finished second in class, with Competition Motors’ Tom Tait completing the DHL podium. After his penalty was applied, Bachoura sank to fifth in class and 12th overall on the road.
Smither nosed his No. 58 Dark Horse R into the tires at Canada Corner after seven minutes of racing, bringing out the yellow for the first time.
Scott Thomson was shown the mechanical black flag for the rear bumper and diffuser hanging off the back of his No. 30 LAP Motorsports Mustang. Race control quickly called a brief yellow for debris at The Kink when his bumper became detached, setting up a two-lap shootout for the win.
After missing most of the sessions this weekend and Race 1, Colin Harrison was also absent from the grid in Sunday’s contest.
RESULTS: Race 2
