Riley Dickinson claimed his third win of the season in Race 1 of the Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America weekend at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.
The Texan took the checkered flag behind the safety car after a heavy collision at Turn 8 between Pro class competitors Michael McCarthy and Jason Hart neutralized the field with seven minutes remaining.
Despite racing laps being cut short, Dickinson controlled the race, with his lead never in question under green flag conditions.
Behind, Tom Sargent took his No. 17 McElrea Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car around the outside of Michael McCann at Turn 1 to claim second place with 15 minutes remaining.
McCann held on to third to complete the overall podium, while JDX Racing’s Will Martin and Ryan Yardley of Topp Racing rounded out the top-five.
Marco Cirone found his way past Pro-Am pole-sitter Alan Metni to initially claim class victory although was penalized post-race for a starting line procedure violation, handing the win to the Kellymoss driver.
It was a 1-2 finish for MDK in the Am class with Mark Kvamme leading from lights to flag in his No. 43 machine over teammate Scott Noble.
Green flag running was limited due to two separate incidents that brought out yellows.
The first of which came during the opening lap when the No. 57 Wright Motorsports Porsche of John Goetz went off track, becoming lodged in the planters between Turns 2 and 3 and placing the field under a full-course caution while the stuck car was removed and soil was swept off the racing line.
The second, and more serious incident involving McCarthy and Hart effectively ended the race with under eight minutes to go. McCarthy was spun by Travis Wiley on the entry to Turn 8, only to be hit by the MDK driver just behind.
Both drivers walked away from the accident to be evaluated by medical personnel.
Tom Sargent will lead the field to green for Race 2 after recording the second-fastest lap in yesterday’s qualifying session.
The second round of the weekend will cap off-track running for all cars in Long Beach tomorrow at 4:20 p.m. PT (7:20 p.m. ET) with live coverage on PorscheCarreraCup.us, Peacock, IMSA.tv, and IMSA Radio.
