Sky-Tempesta Racing is set to make its 24 Hours of Le Mans debut next year, having earned an invitation through its performance in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Bronze Cup.
The stalwart GT3 squad, which returned to Ferrari machinery this year after stints with Mercedes-AMG and McLaren, came out on top in a separate classification where points are scored per entered car over the season.
Notably, this differs from either the drivers’ or teams’ standings in the Bronze Cup, which is why Sky-Tempesta received the auto-invite despite losing the teams’ title to Rutronik Racing.
The Porsche squad only lost out on the Le Mans slot by two points, which was largely due to the outcome of Sprint Cup Race 1 where Rutronik scored points for seventh in class towards the teams’ title, but only picked up points for eighth towards the Le Mans invite.
That was because it finished behind a pair of Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 and, in contrast to the teams’ title classification, the second of these two cars was not invisible when it came to points earned for Le Mans invite classification.
The auto-invite for Sky-Tempesta adds to eight previous slots already given out through the European Le Mans Series and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The two remaining invites will be handed out to the LMP2 and GT champions of the Asian Le Mans Series, which concludes at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit in February.
