Gibson Technology’s LMP2 engine reached a major milestone during last weekend’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, where the GK428 powerplant completed a cumulative six million kilometers (3.7 million miles).

The 4.2-liter normally aspirated V8 engine, which debuted in the 2017 Rolex 24, has been the spec engine in all LMP2 cars competing worldwide, including the WeatherTech Championship, European and Asian Le Mans Series, 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as previously full-time in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The six million kilometer mark equates to almost 150 times around the earth’s circumference.

“Reaching six million kilometers is a fantastic achievement for our GK428 engine and it’s particularly pleasing that this milestone was achieved at the iconic Rolex 24 at Daytona where once again, the engine performed faultlessly,” said Gibson Technology managing director Mark Brittan.

“The milestone of the GK428 is a real testament to the professionalism and skill of the entire Gibson Technology team.

“From the original design engineers through to the technicians who build the units at our Derbyshire HQ, as well as those servicing and supporting them on events around the world, it really is an amazing team achievement which we are all very proud of.”

While continuing to supply and support current LMP2 customers, Gibson is already working on the engine’s successor, which will be used in the next-generation LMP2 cars that are scheduled to debut in 2028, with the British company having been awarded the tender from 2028-32.

The 3.4-liter V6 turbo will be designed and manufactured in collaboration with Nissan and NISMO.
