Romain Grosjean has described a potential role with Ford Racing’s LMDh program as a “good opportunity if it comes” as he seeks a path back to top-class prototype racing after his exit from Lamborghini.

The Swiss-born Frenchman spent two seasons competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s GTP class with Lamborghini, securing the SC63’s best finish of fourth during Motul Petit Le Mans last October.

He revealed his departure from Lamborghini’s factory roster in November and has joined Myers Riley Motorsports’ Ford GTD effort for this weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Ford recently revealed the first three names for its LMDh program set to debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar class next year, with Logan Sargeant, Mike Rockenfeller and Seb Priaulx set to pilot the as yet unnamed ORECA-chassised prototype.

When asked if his new involvement with Ford’s GT3 efforts could be a precursor to a role with its top-line program, Grosjean outlined a strong desire to return to prototype competition in the future.

“To answer more broadly, LMDh is probably in my future,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed driving LMDh in IMSA, doing Le Mans two years ago.

“Prototypes is where I see myself being the most efficient and performing the best.

“Ford is a fantastic brand and I believe they will do things right. So yes, I’m not going to lie, it will be a good opportunity if it comes.”

The Mustang GT3 EVO is the first front-engined GT car that Grosjean has raced in his career, with his GT experience up to now having come in the mid-engined Matech Competition Ford GT in 2010 and the Iron Lynx Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 in three GTD Pro appearances across 2023 and 2024.

“It is a big car,” Grosjean said about the Mustang. “It rolls quite a lot, just because of the size of it.

“When I was in the Lambo there was a change with the Evo update and I was really struggling on the brakes with the ABS.

“I felt like I was a lot happier in the Mustang. On the brakes it felt better for me.

“Generally I think it [is] an interesting car to drive.

“Of course, coming from the prototype everything is a little bit slower. But I felt like the systems were working really well.

“The EVO kit work seems to be working good as well.”

Grosjean will share the Myers Riley Mustang in this weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona with Sheena Monk, Ford Racing Development Team driver Jenson Altzman as well as team regular Felipe Fraga.
