Porsche driver Nico Mueller has acknowledged that his sports car racing activities will be limited to “single events” this season as his Formula E commitments for the German marque will prevent him from taking on a full season.

Mueller was signed as a factory Porsche driver last August, with last year’s Bahrain season finale marking the end of his two-year tenure as a member of Peugeot’s FIA World Endurance Championship program.

While it was announced at the time that Mueller’s main commitment would be in Formula E with customer squad Andretti Global, the Swiss driver spoke at the time of potentially staying involved in WEC as well, and was linked with a possible seat with Porsche Hypercar customer team Proton Competition.

Two rounds into the Formula E season, Mueller has now all but ruled out being back in the WEC this year, as he said adding a second full season to his existing commitments for Porsche was “unrealistic”.

However, he added that it was the “common understanding” with Porsche that he would appear in selected sports car races for the Weissach marque.

“I love challenging myself on different levels and I’ve had the privilege to do so for many years and I love to combine different championships, different programs,” said Mueller.

“This year it was clear from the get-go that the focus would be more on Formula E, but always with the door open to do single events here and there.

“I think a full championship is unrealistic with the way the commitment is structured for Formula E and I’m perfectly fine with that.

“But I would love to do some endurance racing outside of Formula E and, the way the season is structured, finishing in July, I’m sure we will get some opportunities to do that, and that’s the common understanding with Porsche as well.

“I think, they’ve clearly seen that, getting me on board doesn’t give them only a specialist for one thing, but they can use me for, several playing fields and I love those challenges.

“I think I can definitely, bring some experience from the endurance side of things into their programs as well. So, whenever, the right opportunity comes up, I’m definitely ready to go for that with both hands as well.”

It remains unclear which events Mueller could contest between his Formula E commitments for Porsche, although the 24 Hours of Le Mans and its official test day do not clash with the all-electric series’ calendar.

Likewise, the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa falls on a free weekend for the Formula E paddock, although the Nürburgring 24 clashes with the Jakarta E-Prix.
