Haupt Racing Team is unlikely to expand into the FIA World Endurance Championship’s LMGT3 class next year as team CEO Ulrich Fritz said it’s not the team’s “main priority,” even though he kept the door open for a potential European Le Mans Series bid.
While uncertainty remains over Mercedes-AMG’s place on the WEC grid next year, the brand’s Head of Customer Racing Stefan Wendl has indicated that the brand has several teams with financial backing in place that are “very highly interested” in a world championship bid.
Fritz told Sportscar365 that HRT is currently not interested in expanding into WEC with the German manufacturer.
“We don’t see ourselves there at the moment,” said Fritz.
“Not because of the packaging. I think it is really, really expensive to run such a car. You’re heavily dependent on customers or investors. Not sure if this is our goal.
“I think we have quite some nice platforms now with DTM, also GT Masters, whereas nobody knows how this continues for sure.
“At the moment, this is not the main target. [It] would be nice, maybe [an] entry into Le Mans, yes, absolutely. But WEC, I wouldn’t say.
“On the other hand, I have to say ELMS for us is a very appealing concept.”
Fritz cited the high costs involved as a key reason why WEC is not high on the team’s priority list.
“The first thing about this WEC thing is that it’s a world championship, which is taking place on different continents,” he said.
“Basically, you’re just spending loads of money into logistics, and that doesn’t make the racing any better.
“This is what you need to sell your customers as well, because obviously, they want to have the most driving time and not a lot of downtime due to traveling and whatever.
“This is at least my experience I have with them at the moment. But it might be that other people have different customers.
“This is all okay. For us at the moment, I wouldn’t say it’s on our priority list. Would we do it in case there would be the option?
“Because as far as I understand, and it’s not sure how this goes, or where this goes, also with the entries. Then yes, why not look into it, but it was not the main priority.”
Fritz was quick to keep the door open for an entry into the ELMS, although he added that the team has a strong base in several other championships.
It currently competes in Fanatec GT World Challenge powered by AWS, ADAC GT Masters and DTM, while it has also been a regular at the Nürburgring 24 for several years.
“ELMS is something that is appealing to us,” Fritz said. “But everything else is possible as well. I think we have found ourselves in GT World Challenge for many years now, which is a nice platform for sure.
“But also, GT Masters, for several reasons, makes sense for us anyways, because you can educate young drivers there.
“It’s just a pity that the grid has shrunk so much. But I still hope, and we have seen similar things with GT World Challenge Sprint in the past. So I’m still hoping that it comes back.”
