Three-time Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup champion Charles Weerts will make his first appearance at the Nürburgring 24, driving for BMW M Team RMG.

The Belgian racer will share a BMW M4 GT3 with fellow factory drivers Dan Harper and Max Hesse.

Harper and Hesse have plenty of experience through three previous starts with BMW at the Eifel endurance classic together with Neil Verhagen.

The three drivers came up through the Junior Team program together before graduating to full works status, with Verhagen notably recently competing in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Cadillac with Paul Miller Racing.

Harper, Hesse, Verhagen and Weerts will form part of BMW’s newly announced ‘Gen2K’ initiative, revolving around the fact that all four drivers were born either in or after the year 2000.

The four drivers will take part in joint events with Gen2K members and may serve as mentors for the next up and coming generation of racing drivers. Similarly to the Junior Team, the program will be overseen by Jochen Neerpasch.

“We are generally very proud of our line-up of BMW M works drivers, but particularly proud of its diversity,” said BMW M Motorsport director Andreas Roos.

“Our drivers hail from twelve different nations, spanning ages from 23 to 55 years old, nine of them are younger than 30.

“To have four drivers born in the year 2000 and later who already have several years of experience at the highest level is remarkable.

“Added to that, we have international champions like Sheldon van der Linde and Dries Vanthoor, who are only slightly older than the Gen2K drivers. This forward-thinking line-up is impressive.”

In addition to RMG, BMW will be represented at the second round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge by last year’s runner-ups ROWE Racing, which will see Raffaele Marciello and Robin Frijns make their first N24 appearances since joining the BMW factory roster.
