The Intelligent Money British GT Championship has adjusted its 2021 schedule with the season due to start seven weeks later than planned following the postponement of the first two rounds.
The traditional Oulton Park Easter Monday season-opener in early April and the second round at Snetterton in late April have both been pushed back to later dates in the year.
This leaves the May. 22-23 fixture at Brands Hatch, which was originally marked down to host round three, as the new curtain-raiser.
Snetterton has been re-arranged as round five on Aug. 7-8, while Oulton Park is now on a mid-September date that was initially reserved for the season finale.
This has prompted British GT to shift its final round at Donington Park to Oct. 16-17.
A statement from the SRO Motorsports Group which runs the series said the changes were made to “ensure that a full seven-event, nine-race calendar can be completed”.
After the new opening round at Brands Hatch, the British GT season is due to head to Silverstone for its annual three-hour centerpiece enduro.
The unaltered late June date avoids a consequential calendar adjustment for SRO’s new GT Rebellion Series, which is sharing the Silverstone 500 grid with British GT.
Donington Park and Spa-Francorchamps are set to stage the next two events on their original July dates, ahead of the rescheduled meetings at Snetterton and Oulton Park.
Sportscar365 understands that SRO made an independent decision to delay its season start, with input on date availabilities from MotorSport Vision which operates several British circuits including Oulton, Snetterton and Donington.
While the national sporting authority Motorsport UK has prohibited race events from taking place during the four constituent countries’ ongoing nationwide coronavirus lockdowns, a date has not been established for when this ruling will be lifted.
The updated British GT calendar avoids clashes with GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS and the British Touring Car Championship.
