John Capestro-Dubets set the fastest lap across a pair of McLaren Trophy America practice sessions on Friday at Virginia International Raceway, recording his benchmark time in the morning before Practice 2 was abandoned for an incident involving he and George Lawrence.
The GMG Racing driver, competing solo this weekend in the Pro class, quickly climbed to the top of the Practice 1 times, laying down a 1:49.218 lap in his No. 4 McLaren Artura Trophy Evo to outpace the Am class RP Motorsports by Forte Racing entry of Kevin Madsen, who finished the morning session 0.398 seconds off of Capestro-Dubets’ time.
Flying Lizard Motorsport’s Canaan O’Connell was third-quickest overall and set the Pro-Am pace in the No. 18 Artura Trophy he shares with Brandon Kreutz.
Andrew Davis set the day’s fourth overall fastest time with his best lap of a 1:49.778 from the shortened Practice 2 with Tommy Pintos rounding out the day’s top five fastest times with his best effort from Practice 1.
In the opening minutes of Practice 2, an on-track incident involving Pro-Am competitor Lawrence and Capestro-Dubets led to a red flag.
Race control swiftly abandoned the session before suspending all on-track activity following the accident in order for necessary repairs to take place at the site of the accident.
Five drivers had yet to record times in the abandoned session, with Davis’ fast lap coming on his third of three total laps.
Neil Langberg brought out the red flag 30 minutes into first practice when he went off in the second sector aboard the No. 53 RP by Forte McLaren after taking over from Madsen.
Practice running resumed six minutes later before the red came out a second time when Bob Stockard stopped in Sector three in his Am class Hooper Street Racing entry.
First qualifying is scheduled for 8:05 a.m. EST on Saturday.
