Tommy Pintos charged to pole position for Race 1 of the McLaren Trophy America weekend at Road America for Skip Barber Racing.

Despite already having the fastest time of the session at the time, the Spaniard laid down a storming 2:07.617 lap on his final flying attempt around the four-mile Wisconsin circuit in the Pro class No. 919 McLaren Artura Trophy Evo he shares with Cooper Broll.

Pintos’ late improvement was enough to comfortably secure the pole, 0.909 seconds over a charging Jeff Cook, who also improved on his final lap to steal the Am class pole from GMG Racing’s James Sofronas.

Cook will roll off the grid second in Race 1, ahead of RWE Motorsport McLaren of Casey Dennis, who wound up third fastest overall and second-quickest in Pro, 1.768 seconds down on Pintos’ best time. Sofronas will start fourth, having set the second-best time in Am.

Fifth overall was new entrant Tanner Harvey, who secured the Pro-Am pole in the No. 24 Forte Racing McLaren he shares with practice pace-setter and fellow series debutant Patrick Liddy.

Tom Kopczynski was the highest-qualifying Papaya Cup competitor, finishing the session seventh overall and third in Pro-Am in the no. 17 Riley Motorsports McLaren he co-drives with Eric Filgueiras.

The 15-minute session ran entirely green, allowing the field of 15 drivers to lay down their quick laps with the maximum amount of track time ahead of this afternoon’s race.

Race 1 of the weekend is scheduled for Saturday at 12:05 p.m. CST with live coverage on SRO’s GT World and McLaren Automotive’s YouTube channels.
