GMG Racing is “looking forward” to the launch of the McLaren Trophy America series, with team principal James Sofronas revealing big plans for the California-based team in SRO America’s newest single-make series.

The longtime SRO America entrant will field two McLaren Artura Trophy Evo cars in this weekend’s season opener at Sonoma Raceway, with Sofronas set to drive solo in the No. 14 entry in the Am class alongside the new pairing of John Capestro-Dubets and Andrew Chinnici in the Pro-Am ranks, aboard the No. 4 entry.

Chinnici fills in for primary driver Kevin King, who will miss the Sonoma event to tend to a personal matter.

“We are also supporting this weekend a two-car effort in the new McLaren Trophy America series that is set for the season,” said Sofronas.

“We have a total of five cars being delivered over the next six months. We are excited about this opportunity with the McLaren brand and the great partnership with McLaren Newport Beach.”

Sofronas said the comprehensive program, which is set to grow in the coming months, stems from its recently opened new base at The Thermal Club.

“That is where the McLaren program has continued to grow and Kyle [Washington, GT3 customer] has more driver development experience at Thermal than any other tracks combined,” he said.

“As usual, we have been very busy over the winter developing new customers and racing programs. It all takes off with our Porsche and McLaren Trophy programs this weekend at Sonoma.”

The McLarens arrived in GMG Racing’s Thermal shop just one week ago, which has led to busy times in adapting the cars to Trophy specification.

“Neither car has turned a wheel,” Sofronas said. “They were both delivered last week, and we had to convert them to Trophy packages, which is basically a three-day process.

“The only activity with the car has been loading them on the trailer, but we are really looking forward to shaking them down in testing Thursday.

“I always have faith in the GMG squad to get the cars prepared to the highest level possible.”

A total of 15 cars are set for this weekend’s pair of season opening McLaren Trophy America races.
