Brock Giblin has not raced in a national series since he suffered burns to 70 percent of his body in a crash at Sydney Motorsport Park in 2014, but will make a return to contest Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia.

Giblin will run his Dark Horse R under his Link Signs Racing banner and receive technical support from Ryan McLeod’s RM Race Cars operation.

It was, in fact, McLeod who pulled Giblin from his burning car after arriving at the scene during Friday practice 11 years ago. The pair’s bond has remained strong since, with McLeod providing Giblin several state-level opportunities.

Since the crash, Giblin has been a frontrunner in Queensland’s Hyundai X3 Excel Series and was a contender at last year’s Bathurst 6 Hour driving a HSV VF GTS before a puncture led to contact with the concrete.

The 28-year-old is eager to return to the national scene through Mustang Cup Australia.

He believes the Mustang Cup’s calendar, the even playing field in a one-make class and the Dark Horse R’s V8, rear-wheel-drive package are the key factors bringing him back to a top-flight racing class.

“It’ll be fun,” said Giblin. “I like the idea of everything being the same and homologated by Ford, so it should be a level playing field throughout the season. Hopefully, there’s a lot of clean and close racing.

“The calendar is the best part. It was the biggest drawcard for me.

“Racing at these great circuits is a dream come true and and I feel that this class will be here in Australia for many seasons to come.”

Giblin will contest the outright class in Mustang Cup, giving him a chance to receive a Ford Racing Technical Center experience, among a raft of other prizes.

He got his first taste of his Dark Horse R at Queensland Raceway today, getting familiar in his new surroundings ahead of the season opener at Phillip Island as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries on March 27-29.
