Mills Racing has claimed victory and the inaugural Pirelli World Challenge SprintX Championship following a wild season finale Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
A two-way fight for the win of the 60-minute race came down to the final lap, when contact between the then-leading No. 46 Mills BMW Z4 GT3 of Michael Mills and the Chris Beaufait-driven Racer’s Edge Motorsports SIN R1 GT4 gave way for Tim Pappas to take the lead and cross the line first.
However, Pappas’ Black Swan Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R received a post-race time penalty due to not meeting the 90-second minimum pit stop time, handing the race win back to Mills and co-driver John Edwards.
While the family run team claimed the GT Teams’ Championship, former GTA champion Michael Mills also took home the Sportsman Cup.
The No. 23 M1 GT Racing Audi R8 LMS of David Ostella and Dion Von Motltke completed the overall and GT class podium in third, after contact with the No. 14 GMG Racing Porsche of Brent Holden with less than 20 minutes to go.
Ostella limped the Audi home ahead of the No. 451 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche of Andy Wilzoch, who finished fourth.
The season finale saw its share of attrition, with both the No. 98 Calvert Dynamics and No. 79 Alex Job Racing Porsches dropping out of the lead with drive issues.
Enrique Bernoldi and Jeff Burton claimed top honors in GT Cup, with a fifth place overall finish for its No. 10 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo.
The pairing led another 1-2 class finish for the Utah-based team, after the No. 63 Lamborghini won on Saturday.
Calvert Dynamics, meanwhile, scored a sweep of the SprintX weekend in GTS, with Andrew Aquilante and Kurt Rezzetano taking another class win in their No. 37 Ford Mustang Boss 302R.
Rezzetano edged out the No. 07 TRG-AMR Aston Martin Vantage GT4 of Max Riddle for the class win.
