Lamborghini Evaluating Potential End of Season Debut with Huracán GT3

While full-season customer efforts are already being evaluated for 2016 in both the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and Pirelli World Challenge, Lamborghini’s new Huracán GT3 could make its U.S. racing debut by the end of this year.

A maiden outing in the TUDOR Championship season-ending Petit Le Mans could be on the cards, and according to Lamborghini Head of Motorsport Giorgio Sanna, a single-race outing this year is something the Italian manufacturer is considerably evaluating.

“We are evaluating to enter in the end of this season to do, let me say, a first race, a first experience to promote the car,” Sanna told Sportscar365. “Actually it’s not confirmed, but we are thinking about it.”

Any end-of-year debut for the GT3 variant would come ahead of a full-season presence in 2016, when the TUDOR Championship adopts full FIA GT3 regulations for the GT Daytona class.

“The common target for all the manufacturers in IMSA is to have the same rules we have in the rest of the world, not only Europe, so FIA GT3,” Sanna said. “This is for 2016.

“We are looking to enter with the Huracán GT3 in both series, the TUDOR series of course, and also Pirelli World Challenge. We have already a lot of requests from American teams that are interested to run with the Huracán GT3. So we will see in the next month.”

The lone Lamborghini presence in World Challenge at the moment is Blancpain Racing’s updated Gallardo Extenso R-EX, driven by Nick Catsburg, an effort that is not supported by the factory.

Last weekend marked the kickoff to the new season IMSA-sanctioned Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, which saw the U.S. debut of the new Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2 for Super Trofeo.

In the series where the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 is competing full-time, the Blancpain Endurance Series, Sanna and Lamborghini are still awaiting an outcome of the appeal from the season-opener at Monza last month.

There, the race stewards deemed the refueling restrictor used didn’t conform to the regulations, but the GRT Grasser Racing Team appealed.

“We are awaiting the appeal. That will be done before the Silverstone race,” Sanna said. “We are confident that, let me say, the justice will give us what we expect.”
