Corvette, Porsche Involved in Major Accident at VIR

Corvette Racing and Porsche North America’s day got off to a tough start as the Nos. 3 and 911 GT Le Mans cars were involved in a major accident in final GT practice at Virginia International Raceway.

Both the No. 3 Corvette C7.R of Jan Magnussen and No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR of Richard Lietz reportedly went off on oil laid down by another car in Turn 1.

Lietz first spun and was stopped in the grass near the barrier before Magnussen slammed into the side of the Porsche at a high rate of speed.

The incident brought an early end to the 90-minute practice session.

Lietz, who is awake and alert, is being transported to a local hospital for further treatment, while Magnussen remains in the track medical center, with an additional update to follow from IMSA.

Heavy damage has been sustained to both cars, particularly the No. 911 Porsche on the driver’s side door. It’s unclear if the car will be able to race.

Corvette Racing has already taken apart its No. 3 car and program manager Doug Fehan told Sportscar365 they are hopeful to make qualifying, which begins at 12:50 p.m.
