Danny Formal has expressed his desire of remaining with Wayne Taylor Racing and still being closely linked to Lamborghini next year, but admits that contracts are still yet to be signed.
The multi-time Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America champion, who is in his third full season of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD competition with WTR’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2, faces at least one change for next year in that the Huracan will no longer be eligible in series competition.
IMSA provided a one-year waiver for both the Huracan and Temerario GT3 to race in the GT classes due to the new-for-2026 car’s introduction period, with Lamborghini only able to choose one model for next year, which will be the Temerario.
When asked about his plans for next year, the Lamborghini Young Professional driver said he hopes to remain with both WTR and the Italian manufacturer.
“Lamborghini’s been great to me,” said Formal. “We’ve been together with them for a long time now. I’ve gotten really close with everyone in Sant’Agata (Bolognese).
“If that’s the route WTR chooses and they choose me, too, right? It’s coming to crunch time [with] contracts being up. If they choose me, I’d love to stay in the family, and if Lamborghini chooses to keep me I’d love to be there.”
It’s known that WTR, which currently fields two Cadillac V-Series.Rs in the GTP class and a solo Huracan GT3 EVO2 in GTD, has been in discussions with other GT3 manufacturers for next year, although has also placed a bid to run Lamborghini’s GTD Pro effort next year, amid news that Pfaff Motorsports will not return.
The Canadian squad gave the Temerario GT3 its first victory in global competition last time out at Road America.
“I think we’ve seen the potential of the Temerario already this season,” said Formal. “They brought the big upgrade to Road America already with the different brakes.
“I’d love to be in the Temerario. think it’s a great car. I think they’re going to bring upgrades through the season and into next season, and it’s just getting better and better.
“They’ve had very low reliability issues, which is great for a car that has such limited testing and they kind of threw it in the deep end, racing the DTM championship, racing in SRO in Europe and racing here in IMSA.
“I think they did a great job of choosing just pro cars and pro teams to take it, to make it right for the gentlemen drivers and make it right for the satellite team.
“I think it’s a great platform and I’m excited to see what my team chooses and hopefully I’m in their plans.”
Formal: Huracan GT3 EVO2 “Taught Me” Endurance Racing
While excited for the prospects of potentially getting behind the wheel of Lamborghini’s latest GT3 contender, the 30-year-old Costa Rican said it’s also bitter-sweet, given his tenure with the V10-powered beast.
“I’ve been part of the Young Driver Program of Lamborghini since 2021 and it’s been a great program,” said Formal. “They’ve helped me a lot in my career. Since I started driving the Huracan, it’s been full seasons for me in IMSA.
“For sure, it’s going to be a goodbye, a very sad goodbye let’s say. Have we been the fastest the whole time? No. But we’ve showed great speed with the car though.
“It’s been kind of up and down the last few years but for sure, [the Huracan is the] best sounding GT3 car of all-time, in my opinion. That car is going to truly be missed. I’m gonna miss it for sure. It’s been great to us.
“It taught me how to race endurance racing. I come from the sprint world, sprint racing with Super Trofeo, and karting. I’ve been karting my whole life. It’s about 20-lap races, only you, and how to make the car good for yourself.
“Coming into this mindset of endurance racing, it’s been a big shift, it’s all been with the Huracan.
“But I’m so excited to be a part of this last car in IMSA history.
“Wayne Taylor Racing is very proud of what we’ve accomplished with the car. This year specifically, I think we’ve nailed the race car.
“I think I’ve only complained about my post-race reports or sessions we have each race once. The setup has been on point. The guys have done an incredible job nailing the car in our third year with it. It’s been so nice to drive.”
