Ried Wins Porsche Cup

Longtime privateer Christian Ried has won this year’s Porsche Cup, given to the world’s most successful Porsche driver. 

Ried, who raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series for his Proton Competition squad, was awarded the trophy by Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Porsche AG, during Saturday evening’s ‘Night of Champions’ awards dinner in Germany.

It marked the German’s first Porsche Cup after nearly two decades of racing Porsches around the globe, in a strong season that saw him finish runner-up in the GTE-Am championship with two class wins.

Based on an idea of Ferry Porsche, the Porsche Cup has been awarded since 1970 to the non-factory driver who has piloted a Porsche most successfully over the course of a season.

The award recognizes drivers from around the globe in various race series. Drivers may compete, and score points in, multiple, recognized series.

In addition to the trophy itself, Ried takes home a Porsche road car valued at more than $140, 000.

Ried earned 8,700 points this year, edging out last year’s Porsche Cup winner Robert Renauer, who finished second. Renauer earned prize money totaling $35,000, with Switzerland’s Daniel Allemann finishing third and taking home $30,000.
