Last week, the long-awaited news that GT3-spec cars will replace GTE as IMSA’s top production-based class was made official.
For anyone following the industry developments, especially over the last 12 months, it came as no major surprise but rather a solidification of the sanctioning body’s long-term vision for GT racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Since the completion of the factory Ford GT program at the end of 2019, followed by Porsche’s exit from the class and now BMW’s scaled-back program, the GTLM class has been left on life support, with only three full-season entries for the 2021 season.
It was clear IMSA needed to be proactive in revising its class structure to not have a repeat of the late 2000s when Corvette ran virtually unopposed in the painfully slow demise of GT1 in the American Le Mans Series.
