Audi Sport customer racing has celebrated a significant milestone, with the 200th Audi R8 LMS having been produced.
The German manufacturer, which began production of the mid-engined GT3 car in 2009, has built 136 models of the first-generation R8 LMS and R8 LMS ultra cars, and 64 of the new-generation R8 LMS to date.
The 200th car, completed at Audi’s motorsports base in Neckarsulm, will be delivered to Land Motorsport, which currently leads the ADAC GT Masters championship, as well as being a frequent competitor in VLN competition.
“We’re proud of this mark of 200 cars,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of quattro GmbH.
“With more than ten manufacturers offering their products, including many premium sports car brands, the GT3 market is fiercely competitive in many countries.
“The demand shows that both our product and our services are focused on the customer and absolutely competitive.”
Audi is the first GT3 manufacturer to reach this milestone, having also been the most successful brand in international customer-based GT competition.
To date, both generations of cars have combined to win 28 overall championships worldwide, with 34 class titles, nine overall victories in 24-hour races, plus four wins in 12-hour races.
“When our new model was launched last year, many teams opted for the Audi R8 LMS – and inquiries from many parts of the world continue to be received in large numbers,” said Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing.
“Our teams and drivers have been battling for victories and championship titles around the globe ever since the new race car’s first full season.”
