The Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo will make its Pirelli World Challenge debut in next weekend’s SprintX race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, with DXDT Racing having confirmed a two-car GT class entry for the season-ending round.

James Burke and David Askew, who teamed up in DXDT’s Audi R8 LMS ultra in the most recent SprintX event at Utah Motorsports Campus, have been named drivers for the No. 63 Lamborghini, with ex-Formula One ace Enrique Bernoldi and Jeff Burton in the No. 10 car.

It will mark the first pro race in the U.S. for the Huracán Super Trofeo outside of the single-make Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America series, which DXDT currently competes in with three entries.

“It’s really a collaboration between us, Lamborghini and also World Challenge,” team co-principal David Hikes told Sportscar365. “Marcus [Haselgrove, PWC Competition Director] have a longstanding relationship going back to the Audi days.

“It’s been an combined effort to bring that car and bring another option [to race], another venue for people who own these cars. These cars were free, so we thought we’d go out, try them out, see how they do.”

Hikes said the cars will run in the GT class, balanced to the FIA GT3-spec machinery. They have received a 40kg increase in minimum weight and a 2mm smaller air restrictor (40-38mm) compared to the specification run in Super Trofeo.

“We’re working directly with World Challenge and Lamborghini to get the platform set right, so that for next year, if there’s other people out there that have these cars want to enter into World Challenge, we would have pretty much laid the groundwork for these cars to be competitive in the series,” he said.

“We’ve already run these cars at Laguna this year so we have a really good baseline of how they were they should be. Now we have a really good baseline to compare that to for World Challenge to get even more information.”

The Utah-based team made its PWC debut in last month’s SprintX round at Utah, with Burke claiming pole and leading Race 1 until encountering electrical issues during the mandatory pit stop and driver change.

Hikes said the team plans to expand into GT3 racing full-time next year with a to-be-announced program, either in PWC or the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

“We have plans of returning to the World Challenge paddock next year in a different facet but we want to offer this to our existing Super Trofeo clients as another avenue of racing,” he said.

“The World Challenge paddock is so great to be in. There’s so many different competitors at multiple levels, from gentlemen drivers to factory drivers.

“It makes sense for us to be a part of it and help Lamborghini expand their horizons on different series.”
