IMSA has renamed the categories for the new-look Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda championship, which will kick off next year with LMP3 and existing Prototype Lites machinery.

An IMSA spokesperson confirmed to Sportscar365 that the PC1 class will now simply be known as LMP3, with the current L1 class, for the Elan DP02 cars, set to be called MPC, for Mazda Prototype Challenge.

The change puts the championship in line with international standards, as the new top class will be open to all ACO-homologated LMP3 machinery, including the Ligier JS P3, Ave-Riley AR-2 (pictured, above), Ginetta LMP3, ADESS-03 and the new Norma M30.

The 2017 season kicks off at Sebring in March and will feature a pair of 45-minute races in a single-driver format over seven weekends.
