Colin Braun was quickest in the opening IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice for Sunday’s Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Braun reeled off a best lap of 1:07.341 in his No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 to outpace the No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac V-Series.R of Pipo Derani by 0.780 seconds in the closing minutes of the session.
Filipe Albuquerque was third in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura, followed by Renger van der Zande’s No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac in fourth and Augusto Farfus completing the top-five in the No.24 BMW M Hybrid V8.
Frankie Montecalvo led the way in the production-based ranks, thanks to a late improvement of 1:16.558 in the GTD class No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3.
Antonio Garcia, meanwhile, was quickest in GTD Pro, whose No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R GTD was third among the GT entries, behind the No. 70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S GT3 Evo of Frederik Schandorff.
LMP3 was paced by the No. 30 Jr III Racing Ligier JS P320 Nissan of Garett Grist, which missed the opening minutes of the session with a mechanical issue.
The session featured a two red flags, the first with 30 minutes to go for the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo of Philip Ellis, which briefly stopped on track before rejoining.
A second red came out with 13 minutes to go for the No. 4 Ave Motorsports Ligier of George Staikos, which stopped on track in Turn 5. The session restarted with four minutes to go.
Practice 2 gets underway Saturday at 8 a.m. EDT.
