Juan Pablo Montoya put Acura Team Penske at the top of the time charts in an hour-long practice session that saw weather that ranged from sunny to a torrential downpour.
The session started 15 minutes after it was initially scheduled due to adverse weather conditions that forced track officials to send corner workers, teams, and fans alike in search of shelter and away from the circuit.
The rain swiftly moved away and the session got going long enough for Montoya and co-driver Dane Cameron to turn 14 laps in the No. 6 Acura ARX-05, with Montoya setting the fastest time of 1:36.867 on his tenth tour of the drying track.
A second squall midway through the practice led to another delay, this time a red flag, which was lifted with around ten minutes remaining on the clock.
The session was briefly red flagged once again a few minutes later due to a mionr incident involving the No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R.
Helio Castroneves made it a second-consecutive Acura Team Penske 1-2 0.130 seconds off of Montoya’s pace, with Jordan Taylor third for Wayne Taylor Racing.
Laurens Vanthoor was the quickest of the GT Le Mans runners in the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR, followed by Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Oliver Gavin in second and third, respectively.
A pair of Mercedes-AMG GT3 machines were fastest in GT Daytona, with Jeroen Bleekemolen’s No. 33 Riley Motorsports entry a mere 0.032 seconds faster than Maro Engel in the No. 75 SunEnergy1 machine.
Practice 3 for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is scheduled for 8:35 a.m. Saturday morning, followed by qualifying for the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Showdown at 12:05 p.m. ET.
