Nico Mueller said it is the “dream scenario” to continue in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar category alongside his new commitments as a Porsche factory driver in Formula E, saying “the door is open” for additional activities but decisions are yet to be made.
The Swiss driver was announced as the newest addition to Porsche’s roster of factory talent last month and will compete for Andretti Global in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship next year.
As a result, he is set to depart Peugeot’s Hypercar squad after a two-year stint at the end of the season. A double program featuring WEC is understood to be a possibility as part of his new commitments, most likely in a customer Porsche 963.
Mueller said he “would love keep doing both,” having combined his Peugeot Hypercar drive with a seat in the ABT Cupra Formula E squad for the past two seasons.
“Obviously, the focus will be Formula E, that’s the first program I’m committed to,” said Mueller.
“And together with Andretti, I think it also kind of presented the best opportunity in terms of sportive expectations that we all have together.
“But yes, if there is any sort of chance to stay here and do WEC in a Hypercar, that would be the dream scenario. But at the moment, that’s just not decided.
“As time runs down and as this season comes closer to the end, we’ll start discussing whatever the possibilities are. But at the moment, it’s fully open.”
Mueller spoke particularly highly of the wish to add to his three starts at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, noting that that is “top of the list.”
When quizzed about the possibility for further outings in sports car outing, potentially in Porsche machinery, Mueller stated that “the door is open to it.”
“I would definitely love to do some cool stuff besides Formula E,” he said. “The key point is Formula E is what is going to be the priority. What I can do around that hasn’t been discussed internally yet.
“I did Daytona in LMP2. That is definitely is one I’d love to go back and do. IMSA generally is old school tracks and something I’d love to discover a bit more.
“There is similarity with Formula E where you are discussing a lot less about putting four wheels on the other side of white lines. It is definitely something I would like to do.
“If you are talking about a bucket list, there is other stuff I would love to try. I would love to go down to Australia and try one of those V8 Supercars.”
While his time with Peugeot saw his sports car activities limited to just WEC, Mueller’s tenure with Audi saw the 32-year-old compete in a wide variety of championships and disciplines.
It incluced a nine-year stint in GT3, where he competed with the likes of Team WRT, Car Collection Motorsport and Phoenix Racing.
A return to GT3 was described as “definitely also an option” by Mueller, noting that “I don’t know more than it being an open possibility.”
Furthermore, he spoke of an ambition to returning to headline GT3 races like the Nürburgring 24, where he holds one previous overall victory.
“It is definitely one I’d love to go back to and compete for the overall win again,” he said. “It was 2015, so a few years ago and then podiums many times since.
“Spa is another: I have finished in all the positions except first. That is definitely also one. I think Australia is really one I’d like to do.”
