Nico Mueller has been unveiled as a factory Porsche driver, a move that could see him race a customer 963 in the FIA World Endurance Championship next year.

As announced by the French marque last month, Mueller will end a two-year relationship with Peugeot upon the conclusion of the current WEC season.

The Swiss driver had been linked with a possible move to the Porsche stable in Formula E for some time, and this was finally confirmed on Tuesday with the news that he will join the customer Andretti Global outfit for the 2024-25 campaign.

On Wednesday, Porsche announced that Mueller will join its ranks of factory drivers, with the exact makeup of his program outside of Formula E still to be decided.

However, a double program that also encompasses WEC is understood to be a possibility, and would most likely take the form of a berth at Proton Competition, which is set to be Porsche’s only Hypercar customer in the series next year with JOTA Sport’s switch to Cadillac now finalized.

Precedent exists for such a move, as Andre Lotterer combined a season driving for Andretti in 2022-23 with his Porsche WEC commitments, albeit missing one round of the all-electric series that clashed with the 24 Hours of Le Mans test day.

“Being a Porsche works driver is a childhood dream come true for me,” commented Mueller.

“When I first came into contact with Porsche, I immediately realised: this is something very special. As a racing driver, Porsche is the brand you look up to.

“To be able to represent Porsche now is a great honour that fills me with a great deal of pride.”

Porsche motorsport boss Thomas Laudenbach added: “We are delighted to welcome another professional with such extensive and varied motorsport experience to our squad.

“Nico has already successfully demonstrated his skills in various challenging racing series. Among other things, he has won the Nürburgring 24 Hours and was twice runner-up in the DTM.

“We initially expect his expertise in formula racing to play a crucial role for Porsche’s Formula E program. We will announce at a later date whether and in which other series Nico will also drive for Porsche.”

Peugeot has already confirmed its current reserve driver Malthe Jakobsen will step up to fill the vacancy left by Mueller in its Hypercar roster for 2025.
