Lamborghini Iron Lynx could double its efforts for two additional races beyond its planned two-car effort at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, with the Italian operation considering adding an entry for a pair of key U.S. rounds.
Head of Lamborghini Motorsport Giorgio Sanna revealed they’re considering entering a second SC63 for the FIA World Endurance Championship event at Circuit of The Americas, as well as the IMSA Battle on the Bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, both of which take place in September.
The two six-hour races are currently part of the Italian manufacturer’s confirmed program that includes a full season WEC effort and four-race IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup program beginning at next month’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, each with a single car.
“Let’s see how the season will develop,” Sanna told selected reporters at last weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.
“Maybe we could have an opportunity but it’s something we have to share and discuss also with the team.
“Based on the general effort, it could be Indianapolis or maybe a second car in COTA. In America we would have the opportunity to have two cars in one race, probably COTA for WEC.
“At this moment it’s not our priority but if we need to do more mileage this would be the chance to do it, maybe in America there could be a chance.”
Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, added: “It’s also a question of resources. We have to stay focused because we’re a small brand. For us it’s already a challenge that we are playing on two fields.
“From the beginning, some of our competitors have done a different strategy. For us it was important, nevertheless, to have [a total of] two cars in two championships because we are committed to both championships.
“The U.S. we have a very good relationship with IMSA and for sure the WEC was a big commitment from our side.
“Therefore we didn’t want to prioritize one of these. But for a company like us, for the first time in this motorsports segment, it’s for sure a challenge.”
Sanna said it’s currently “too early to say” on whether Lamborghini will have two full season entries in both series next year.
“The target is to have, when it’s possible, two cars in Daytona and two cars in Le Mans,” he said.
“Let’s see how this [year] will go and then we will evaluate also based on the eventual requests that we could receive, not from teams side but also from drivers and so-on.
“We have to test ourselves and [evaluate] our capacity in terms of effort and step by step grow as we have done also in GT3.”
The prospects of customer cars, at least for 2025, however, are unlikely according to the Lamborghini motorsport boss.
“For this moment it’s not planned,” said Sanna. “We prefer to have one reference team, also to have the maximum effort and focus on one structure. This would be an advantage, also competing in two championships in parallel.”
