Weisenberg Fastest in Friday Practice at Road America

Lucas Weisenberg led the way on the opening day of track action for Toyota GR Cup North America at Road America after setting the overall fastest lap of the day across a pair of Friday practice sessions.

Weisenberg recorded his benchmark 2:31.147 lap on just his third of ten total attempts in his No. 46 Toyota GR86 Cup car

Spike Kohlbecker went second fastest overall with his best lap in Practice 1 in the No. 55 RVA Graphics Motorsports by Speed Syndicate GR86 Cup car, proving to be just 0.121 seconds off the Lucas Racing driver’s pace.

Ethan Goulart finished the day third fastest overall, less than a tenth of a second off of Kohlbecker and just over two tenths of a second down on Weisenberg.

Current points leader Westin Workman was fourth quickest for BSI Racing, with Will Robusto rounding out the overall top five.

Jeremy Fletcher topped Practice 2, though he was seven tenths off of Weisenberg’s Friday-best pace in the warmer afternoon conditions. All of the top-five times on the day were set in the slightly cooler morning conditions in Practice 1.

The pack in GR Cup North America remains tight, with the top five times across both sessions separated by 0.268 seconds.

TechSport’s Brett Kowalski suffered apparent front-end damage to his No. 15 Toyota in first practice, but managed to bring the car back to pit lane under his own power for repairs with roughly ten minutes remaining in the session.

Kowalksi was able to turn laps in Practice 2, however, finishing the session 15th overall.

Despite the incident, first practice ran entirely green. However, running in second practice was interrupted by a red flag after a high-speed spin for Beltre Curtis, who went wide exiting The Kink, sending his No. 5 Copeland Motorsports Toyota into a spin and eventually the wall.

Curtis was reported to have emerged from the car under his own power, and the session resumed with just over eight minutes remaining.

Qualifying for GR Cup competitors takes place Saturday at 8:55 a.m. CST ahead of the first race of the weekend at 2:05 p.m.
