Mikael Grenier put JMF Motorsports and Mercedes-AMG on top in the second practice session for Sunday’s GT World Challenge season opener at Sonoma Raceway.

The Canadian reeled off a best lap of 1:33.233 in the No. 34 JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo to edge out Friday’s pace-setter, Tom Sargent in the GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R Evo by a mere 0.002 seconds.

Sargent, a Porsche Motorsport North America Selected Driver, made a series of late-session improvements in the Pro-Am class pace-setting entry.

Fellow Selected Driver and reigning Porsche Carrera Cup North America champion Ryan Yardley was third quickest in the No. 31 Wright Motorsports Porsche, followed by Will Bamber in TR3 Racing’s Mercedes-AMG.

The No. 6 Dollahite Racing Ford Mustang GT3 EVO completed the overall top-five and was second quickest in the Pro class, behind Grenier.

Riley Dickinson took the No. 13 Kellymoss Porsche to the sixth-best time in the hour-long session, ahead of Aaron Telitz’s Archangel Motorsports McLaren 720S GT3 Evo in seventh.

The No. 017 Kellymoss Porsche of Colin Braun was eighth, with the No. 12 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo and No. 28 RS1 Porsche of Jan Heylen completing the overall top-ten.

No major incidents were reported in the session, which saw a few spins, including one for the No. 27 JMF Mercedes-AMG of Jason Daskalos.

The third and final practice session, which will run to 30 minutes in length, is set for 2:15 p.m. PST (5:15 p.m. EST).
