P1 Motorsports is closing in on an expansion to Blancpain GT World Challenge America that will see the Florida-based squad nearly double its GT3 commitment with Mercedes-AMG.
Team manager Gary Cummings has revealed to Sportscar365 plans to field a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for JC Perez and a yet-to-be-confirmed co-driver in the seven-round GT3 extended sprint championship, which kicks off at Circuit of The Americas in March.
It comes in addition to the team’s full-season IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship program with Perez and multi-time Blancpain GT Series champion and Mercedes-AMG factory driver Maxi Buhk at the wheel of a seperate Mercedes-AMG GT3.
“JC really wants to concentrate on getting better running the GT3 car,” Cummings told Sportscar365. “He’s selected Mercedes as the car he wants to [focus] his driving on.
“In order to accelerate his learning curve, we’re going to do a full season of PWC.”
It’s understood the team has already placed an order for a third Mercedes-AMG GT3 chassis, as part of an increased commitment to the German manufacturer.
Cummings has given high praise to brand in being the best “bang for your buck” in the GT3 paddock.
It marks the third Mercedes-AMG GT3 confirmed for Blancpain GT America, joining the pair of DXDT Racing entries.
In addition to the IMSA and SRO Motorsports America programs, Cummings said P1 plans to remain in Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America and IMSA Prototype Challenge with customer programs.
