The current generation of LMP2 cars will continue to be eligible for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship until the end of the 2025 season.
In a letter to teams and stakeholders, IMSA President John Doonan on Friday outlined the North American sanctioning body’s stance towards its second-tier prototype class and also indicated that future plans for LMP3 will be communicated by the end of May.
Previously, LMP2 and LMP3 were only confirmed to run until the end of the current WeatherTech Championship season.
The letter, which Sportscar365 has seen, reads: “To enable current and potential future participants to properly plan ahead, IMSA today confirmed that the LMP2 class with the current generation cars will continue to be eligible in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship through the end of the 2025 season.
“Specific details on IMSA’s future plans for LMP3 eligibility within IMSA sanctioned series will be announced by June 1, 2023.”
The current generation of LMP2 car made its debut in 2017 and has had a standalone class in the WeatherTech Championship since it was partitioned from DPi in 2019.
A new type of LMP2 car was due to replace the 2017 crop globally in 2024, however its introduction has been delayed twice by one year and now stands at the start of 2026.
