Giano Taurino will start this afternoon’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race at Watkins Glen International from the pole, with the grid for Race 2 set to be determined by times from Practice 2 on Thursday due to a session-ending accident.
Taurino, in the No. 88 TR3 Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2, recorded a 1:46.572 lap time in the closing minutes of Q1.
It was 0.320 seconds quicker than the No. 46 Precision Performance Motorsports entry of John Capestro Dubets, who was second overall and the Pro-Am class pole-sitter.
An accident for Am competitor Tom Tait in the No. 64 Flying Lizard Motorsports entry in Turn 3 brought out a session-ending red flag with three minutes left on the clock in Q1.
AJ Muss scored top qualifying honors in the category for Forty7 Motorsports, while LB Cup pole honors in Race 1 went to the No. 34 TR3 Racing Lamborghini of Rodrigo Vales.
Q2, which had a delayed start due to track cleanup from Tait’s accident, saw only 11 of the 36 cars turn laps prior to a red flag for an accident by the No. 33 World Speed Lamborghini of Dan Decker, who went off in Turn 1 and blocked the pit exit.
The grid, as a result, will be determined by Practice 2 results, which will see the No. 88 Taurino Racing Lamborghini also start from pole ahead of the No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport Lamborghini in second.
The first race of the weekend gets underway at 2:25 p.m. EDT, followed by Race 2 on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. Both races will be streamed live on Peacock and IMSA.tv.
