BMW M Motorsport has announced that it will part ways with Team RMG at the end of the season, bringing an end to a partnership that spanned 14 years and resulted in three DTM titles.
In a statement published on Thursday, motorsport director Andreas Roos outlined that “our plans for our future set-up do not provide a common perspective” between the two parties, which resulted in the partnership coming to an end.
Team RMG was founded as Reinhold Motorsport GmbH by team boss Stefan Reinhold in 2010 in order to prepare for BMW’s return to DTM in 2012.
RMG contested 140 DTM races from 2012 to the end of the Class One era in 2020, taking 19 wins and capturing a pair of drivers’ championships with Marco Wittmann as well as the teams’ title in 2014.
After leaving DTM, RMG moved into GT racing where it operated the BMW Junior Team for Max Hesse, Dan Harper and Neil Verhagen. Additionally, it operated as the official test team for BMW’s motorsport activities.
The team played a part in development cars like the BMW M Hybrid V8, as well as the BMW M4 GT3 Evo that is due to make its customer racing debut next year.
RMG most recently secured an overall podium finish at the Nürburgring 24 with Hesse, Harper and Charles Weerts. The team will “continue to fulfill its duties regularly until the end of the year,” according to BMW.
“I would like to thank Stefan Reinhold and his team for 14 years of collaboration,” said BMW M Motorsport director Andreas Roos.
“During my time as head of BMW M Motorsport, I have come to know BMW M Team RMG as an ambitious operational and valuable and reliable test team that has made a very important contribution to the development of our race cars.
“Of course, the joint title wins in the DTM will remain unforgettable from a sporting perspective. I am pleased to have experienced another sporting highlight live with the podium at this year’s 24h Nürburgring.
“Unfortunately, our plans for our future set-up do not provide a common perspective. Therefore, our collaboration will end with the conclusion of the current season. I wish the team all the best!”
