Elias De La Torre and Daniel Morad combined for overall victory in the first Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race of the weekend at Watkins Glen International.
De La Torre drove the pole-sitting No. 29 TR3 Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 to a 0.464-second victory over the No. 33 XONINE Racing entry of Darius Trinka, who closed the gap in the closing minutes of an incident-filled 50-minute contest.
The No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini of Danny Formal and Graham Doyle continued their undefeated run in Pro-Am with a third place overall result.
Morad, subbing for the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa-bound Dennis Lind, led from the drop of the green over Formal and the No. 88 Taurino Racing entry of Giano Taurino, who was in third.
A full-course caution for the Pro-Am class No. 40 Alliance Racing entry of Angelo Dinkov, which spun and stopped in Turn 8 with 30 minutes to go, led to a delayed opening of the pit window.
When racing resumed with 24 minutes to go, there was further drama, which saw the No. 27 SP Motorsports entry of Jayden Conwright get nudged into the wall after contact on the restart from the No. 38 TPC Racing Lamborghini of Scott Schmidt, who was assessed a drive-through penalty for incident responsibility.
The No. 72 XONINE entry of Troy Petersen, meanwhile, was handed incident responsibility for a run-in with the sister No. 57 car of Nick Groat in Turn 8, which led to a flurry of pit stops amid concerns of another yellow, which failed to materialize.
Another late race scare came with less than three minutes left on the clock of the race when Taurino stopped on track in Turn 8 with right-rear tire damage after contact from the No. 7 WTR Lamborghini of Al Morey, who was given incident responsibility.
There were several other incidents that resulted in sanctions by race control.
The No. 2 RAFA Racing Team Lamborghini of Kiko Porto and Tyler Gonzalez finished third in Pro and fourth overall, with Brandon Gdovic completing the top-five in his solo-driven No. 46 Precision Performance Motorsports entry.
Am class honors went to the No. 70 TR3 machine of Dean Neuls while Anthony Bullock picked up another win in LB Cup, although had an incident in Turn 8 on the cool-down lap adjacent to the stricken No. 88 Taurino entry that was kept on track without a full course yellow.
Race 2 gets underway Saturday at 5:15 p.m. EST with live coverage on Peacock as well as on IMSA and Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s YouTube channels.
