Alex Lynn has become the third official signing for the all-new McLaren Hypercar effort for the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship season.
The Briton joins the previously-confirmed Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor on the roster of drivers that will pilot one of the two United Autosports-run MCL-HYs when the famed Woking marque makes its top-class WEC debut next year.
Lynn, 33, has spent the last three seasons in Hypercar with Cadillac, scoring four pole positions — including in last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans — and a single win, which adds to his past record of WEC success in the LMP2 and LMGTE-Pro categories.
He is set to make his first WEC outing of the year at Barcelona this weekend after spending six months on the sidelines after surgery on his neck.
“As a British driver is there any bigger honour than being a McLaren Racing driver? I don’t think so,” said Lynn. “It’s a team name that I am incredibly proud to wear on my chest and I take great pride and responsibility in representing.
“I don’t underestimate the challenge ahead – I know from experience that WEC and Le Mans are incredibly tough to win and are more competitive today than ever before – but I can already see that Zak [Brown], James [Barclay] and the McLaren Hypercar Team are laying the foundations of a what could be a championship-winning team.
“I couldn’t be more driven towards winning a world title and taking victory at Le Mans for the most iconic racing brand in the world.”
The news of Lynn joining McLaren follows closely on from Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA’s announcement of its 2027 driver lineup.
Team principal James Barclay added: “We are delighted to welcome Alex to the McLaren Hypercar Team. He is a proven winner with extensive experience at the highest level of endurance racing, and his speed, technical understanding and knowledge of the FIA World Endurance Championship will be a real asset to our program.
“Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability on the biggest stages, including at Le Mans, and his signing adds further strength and depth to an already exciting driver line-up as we prepare for our return to the pinnacle of sports car racing.”
Lynn’s confirmation brings McLaren another step closer to finalizing its driver lineup for its first Hypercar season.
Malthe Jakobsen has long been expected to join the Papaya outfit from Peugeot, while current McLaren Formula 1 reserve Leonardo Fornaroli is also expected to feature in the lineup with his hopes of a Haas F1 seat having faded.
Gregoire Saucy, who has been part of the pool of test drivers for the McLaren project, has been linked with the sixth and final seat across the two entries.
