Continental Tire Beyond the Podium: CTSC Daytona

Continental Tire Beyond the Podium premieres today, with a look at some of the bullet points and other notes to come out of the previous weekend’s Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race. Our first look back occurs after Friday’s BMW Performance 200 at Daytona International Speedway.

GS

***Matt Plumb’s win tied Sylvain Tremblay for the CTSC all-time lead in series victories, with 20. The win for Matt and brother Hugh Plumb was also Rum Bum’s first since Lime Rock last year, the third at Daytona and 16th in team history.

***Eight of the top 10 finishers in GS started in the top 10. The No. 8 Mantella Autosport Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R of Mark Wilkins and Anthony Mantella jumped from 13th to ninth and the No. 10 Racers Edge Motorsports Ford Mustang Boss 302R of Ricardo Flores and Nick Galante gained one spot from 11th to 10th.

***Sunoco Challenge winner Oskar Kruger ended 17th in GS co-driving with Dylan Murcott in the No. 62 Mitchum Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro GS.R.

ST

***After locking out five of the top six spots on the grid, only four Porsche Caymans actually finished in the top 10 on Friday, although that was more down to fuel mileage issues than anything else.

***Positions 5 through 9 in ST included two BMWs, two Hondas and the single Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5, with Liam Dwyer and Andrew Carbonell banking a solid ninth place in the former U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant’s Daytona debut.

***New Team Sahlen driver Jeff Segal started the No. 42 Porsche Cayman and finished the sister No. 43. The No. 42 ended 22nd in class with the No. 43 in 14th.

***With second and third in GS, Stevenson Motorsports accomplished something Friday it didn’t all season in 2014: placing both cars on the podium in the same race. Andrew Davis, co-driver of the No. 6 Camaro Z/28.R with Andrew Davis, described the day.

***The fuel issues that hit a number of ST cars on the last lap or two promoted the No. 64 Team TGM BMW 328i to a surprise but welcome podium in third place. Ted Giovanis and David Murry ended third in ST after starting 11th. Murry described his race.
