De Angelis Looking to Bounce Back in Trois-Rivières

The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama season is heading into the home stretch, as teams and drivers ready for the penultimate round of the year this weekend at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (GP3R) in Québec.

The series last traveled to Québec two months ago – competing at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix weekend at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in June – and most recently competed on the streets of Toronto during the Honda Indy weekend.

For Roman De Angelis in the No. 78 Mark Motors Racing Porsche, those two race weekends could not have been more different.

Approaching this weekend at GP3R, the 17-year-old will look to replicate his performance at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the weekend in which he scored his first Porsche GT3 Cup Canada Platinum class victory and narrowed the championship gap on leader and teammate Zach Robichon in the No. 98 Porsche.

However, De Angelis returns to track coming off one of his toughest outings so far this season.

The Ontario native finished fifth during Round 8 in Toronto after issues early in the race dropped him initially to 10th. While he was able to salvage a top-five finish, he lost his momentum in the championship standings.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the track after the Toronto Indy,” said De Angelis, who now sits 32 points behind Robichon. “I wasn’t pleased with the Sunday race and I’m looking to improve on what we learned there. With only two weekends left, I really need to push as hard as I can to keep the hopes of the championship alive.”

De Angelis will have two chances to keep his championship hopes alive this weekend at GP3R. Race 1 of the weekend is scheduled for Saturday at 2:45 p.m. ET, while Race 2 is set for 10 a.m. on Sunday. Both races will be streamed live on IMSA.tv.

“I think the event itself is super interesting, as it’s the oldest street race in North America,” said De Angelis, who claimed last year’s Porsche GT3 Cup Canada Gold class championship. “It’s also a race where the town and fans get super involved, which makes it that much more enjoyable.

“The track also is super short and narrow, which always makes you that much more entertained through the weekend. It’s a race I always look forward to from the beginning of the season and a race where winning is that much more special.”

Ahead of the weekend’s two races, De Angelis and the rest of the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama field are scheduled for two practices on Friday and a 20-minute qualifying session on Saturday morning.
