Porsche has recaptured the production car lap record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with its 911 GT2 RS MR recently completing a lap of the 12.8-mile circuit in 6:40.30.

The time, set by Porsche test driver and VLN veteran Lars Kern on Oct. 25, was more than four seconds faster than the previous record, a 6:44.97 set by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ earlier this year.

Launched in 2017, the GT2 RS is the fastest and most powerful road-going 911-based Porsche to date, with the 700-horsepower MR version featuring modifications to the chassis and aerodynamics focused on “suitability” for track-based driving.

“The Porsche 911 GT2 RS was equipped with the new performance kit from Manthey-Racing, supplemented by an overall vehicle setup tailored to the circuit characteristics of the Nürburgring-Norschleife,” said Head of Porsche Motorsport and GT cars, Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser.

“In this test drive, we simply wanted to assess the potential of the vehicle once more. The result is quite impressive. It really is a fabulous time. This shows again very clearly the exciting possibilities of this sports car.”

Kern said he didn’t have to take any “great risks” to achieve the lap time, which was achieved in his first attempt.

“The drive was great fun,” he said. “The balance of the car is also very good with the new package.”

The GT2 RS MR will undergo a limited production run of 77 units and can be ordered from Porsche Motorsport North America and Manthey Raicng for club sport and track day events.
