The DeltaWing coupe has been forced to withdraw from this weekend’s Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix following a fire in Friday afternoon’s second TUDOR United SportsCar Championship practice session at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Andy Meyrick was at the wheel of the prototype at the time when a fuel line rupture triggered a fire inside the cockpit and engine area.

The Englishman was taken to the infield medical center with mild burns to his face but was later released.

However, the car sustained too much damage for it to be repaired on-site. Meyrick had posted the 6th quickest time in Friday’s morning session.

“It’s disappointing, because we were so quick here,” said team manager Tim Keene. “But we’ve got a new chassis back at the shop so we’ll get back on track as quickly as possible.”

As a result, Sunday’s race is now expected to see a 37-car starting field, following the withdrawal of the No. 31 Marsh Racing Corvette DP of Boris Said, who suffered a broken rib in a high-speed impact in the Turn 1 barriers, also in second practice.

The No. 19 Muehlner Motorsports Porsche, meanwhile, will also not start the race after not being able to finalize a driver lineup.

As the next TUDOR Championship round at Indianapolis was not on the team’s schedule, the DeltaWing will return to action next month at Road America.
